Beginner Guide

New to Pilates?

At In Motion Studio, you do not need to be fit, flexible, experienced or confident to start. Our beginner-friendly Reformer and Mat Pilates classes are designed to help you move safely, build strength and feel supported from your very first class.

Starting Pilates for the First Time?

We know starting something new can feel intimidating.

You might be wondering if you are fit enough, flexible enough, strong enough or coordinated enough. The answer is simple: you do not need to be any of those things to begin.

Pilates is about learning how your body moves, building control and improving strength over time. You are not expected to know what you are doing on your first day — that is what we are here for.

Our instructors will guide you through class, help you set up and offer options so you can work at the right level for your body.

Which class should I start with?

Which Class Should I Book First?

If you are new to Pilates, we recommend starting with one of these options:

Beginner Focused Reformer

A slower-paced Reformer class designed to help you learn the foundations, understand the reformer machine and build confidence.

This is a great place to start if you are nervous, completely new or want extra support.

Reformer All Levels

A Reformer class suitable for beginners and experienced clients. Your instructor will provide options so you can work at the right level for your body.

This is a good option if you are ready to try Reformer Pilates but still want guidance and support.

Flow Mat

A balanced fusion of yoga and Pilates designed to strengthen the body, improve flexibility and calm the mind.

This is a good option if you want a mindful class that includes breath, movement and body awareness.

All Levels Mat

A stronger Mat Pilates class using bodyweight movement, control, breath and added resistance such as hand weights, ankle weights and props.

This is a good option if you want a challenging class that can still be adjusted to suit your ability on the day.

FAQs

Should I Start With Reformer or Mat Pilates?

1

Both Reformer and Mat Pilates can be suitable for beginners. The best option depends on what you feel most comfortable starting with.

Choose Reformer Pilates if you want support from the reformer machine, guided resistance and adjustable springs. Reformer Pilates can be great for different body types and fitness levels because the resistance can be adjusted to suit your body on the day.

Choose Mat Pilates if you prefer exercising on a mat, want to build bodyweight strength, improve core control and use small equipment such as hand weights, ankle weights and props.

Still unsure? Start with the intro pack and try a few classes.

What if I feel nervous?

Please arrive a few minutes early so we can welcome you, show you around and help you get settled.

When you arrive, check in at reception and let your instructor know it is your first time. Your instructor will help guide you through the class and offer options where needed.

If you are attending Reformer Pilates, your instructor will help you set up the reformer, explain the springs and guide you through the movements.

If you are attending Mat Pilates, all equipment is provided, including mats, hand weights, ankle weights and props.

What to wear and bring?

3

Wear comfortable activewear that allows you to move freely. Please avoid clothing that is too loose or restrictive, and make sure long hair is tied up before class.

Grip socks are required for Reformer Pilates and recommended for Mat Pilates for safety and hygiene. You can bring your own or purchase a pair at the studio.

Please bring water and grip socks if you have them. All class equipment is provided. For Mat Pilates, this includes mats, hand weights, ankle weights and props. For Reformer Pilates, your reformer and equipment will be set up in the studio.

Can I come if I have an injury, am pregnant, postnatal or have a medical condition?

4

Please check with your health professional first if you have an injury, are pregnant, are postnatal or have a medical condition.

Let your instructor know before class so they can guide you appropriately and provide alternatives where suitable.

That is completely normal.

Let your instructor know it is your first time. We will help you get settled, explain what you need to know and guide you through class.
